## The Economy We Grew In

Let's be honest: it was a tough year for Malawi.

## Lending Carefully

Fast loan growth demands careful credit discipline. We have set aside appropriate provisions for sectors under pressure — notably agriculture and wholesale trade — and we continue to manage risk on an industry-by-industry basis. Growth today should not become a problem tomorrow.

## What's Next

Four priorities for 2026:

Centenary Bank Reports 383% Profit Growth in 2025

We are proud to announce our partnership with PayChangu, a collaboration that brings simplicity, security, and convenience to the forefront of how customers pay for goods and services.

This strategic integration will allow customers to make instant online payments from any bank directly into business accounts — through a single, seamless API.

The bank's Managing Director Godfrey Byekwaso made the commitment in Lilongwe when, in partnership with mobile payment platform, PayChangu, launched an instant Direct Bank Transfer Application. 

He said through the bank's mission of transforming lives through inclusive, convenient, simplified, and sustainable financial solutions, they are expanding access to digital finance for more Malawians — wherever they are and whatever they earn.

Chief Executive Officer for Pay Changu, Morgan Tembo, said the launch of this application directly addresses one of the key obstacles that businesses have faced in Malawi for far too long—delayed settlements and restrictive banking corridors that slow down commerce and limit growth.

He said the application is also key in financial inclusion.

Centenary Bank and PayChangu Partner to transform digital payments in Malawi

Centenary Bank Limited on Saturday supported the Catholic Women’s Organization in Zomba with financial support of K1,000,000 to go towards the construction of a University girl’s hostel during a fundraising that the women organized dubbed “Chilundu day”.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of the funds, Centenary Bank Limited’s Head of retail and SME Banking, Mayamiko Kalizang’oma said “we share your commitment to education and empowerment. We understand the importance of providing a safe and conducive space for learning, as it is the foundation upon which future generations can build successful and fulfilling lives. We believe that investing in the education of young women not only transforms their individual lives but also has a positive ripple effect on families, communities, and society as a whole”.

Kalizang’oma applauded the Zomba Catholic Women’s Organization for the initiative they take in various initiatives including promoting education, empowerment and the welfare of women.

Speaking after receiving the funds on behalf of the Zomba CWO, Chairlady of the organization expressed deep gratitude towards the bank for the support that the bank rendered amidst ululation from women in attendance of the function.

Centenary bank operates 14 branches, 3 micro-finance outlets, and over 250 agency banking outlets in Malawi, as well as three Foreign Exchange Bureaus located in Lilongwe and Limbe.

Centenary Bank Limited Empowers Women and Supports Education at Chilundu Day Event

Centenary Bank Limited has donated K5,000,000 to the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Malawi (AOGM) to help pregnant women who have lost their homes and medical records due to the cyclone Freddy floods. The handover of the donation was done by the bank's Head of Retail and SME Banking, Mayamiko Kalizang'oma and was received by the Head of Department for AOGM, Dr. Luis Gadama.

According to Kalizang'oma, the bank decided to focus on pregnant women as they are often overlooked when it comes to relief efforts. He stated that "actual life starts at pregnancy and we would not want the unborn babies to not receive the necessary attention". The bank believes that the K5,000,000 donation will go a long way in providing urgent attention to this group and also “believes this is in line with the bank’s mission of making people’s lives better through social impact”.

Kalizang’oma said “As Centenary Bank Limited, we understand that many of these women have lost everything and have no basic items to prepare for the birth of their children. Therefore, we have decided to donate MWK5,000,000 to the Association of obstetricians and gynecologists of Malawi to assist with this noble cause. We believe the funds will go a long way with providing them with birth preparedness packages that include essential items such as zitenje, basins, torches, baby clothing and other necessary needs”.

In response, Dr. Gadama expressed his gratitude for the donation and stated that the focus on pregnant women was much needed. He commended Centenary Bank for their shifted focus onto pregnancy, stating that "pregnancy does not stop" and that pregnant mothers deserve to be well taken care of. He also mentioned that AOGM had provided antenatal care services to 165 pregnant women over the past week, and that the donation from Centenary Bank Limited will go a long way in enhancing their services to expectant mothers hit by cyclone Freddy.

Dr. Gadama also stated that the coming together of Centenary Bank Limited CSR and AOGM's technical expertise will serve the cyclone Freddy victims well. He considers it the coming together of two synergies where financial resources and technical expertise are combined to serve those affected by the cyclone.

The focus on pregnant women is much needed, and the donation will help in providing urgent attention and care to this group. It is hoped that more organizations will follow Centenary Bank's lead in focusing on often overlooked segments of the population when providing relief efforts.
On March 10, the Centenary Rural Development Group and the Lilongwe Archdiocese of the Catholic Church announced the completion of their acquisition of MyBucks Banking Corporation in Malawi and the bank’s name has since been changed to Centenary Bank Limited.

Centenary Bank Donates K5,000,000 to Help Pregnant Women Affected by Cyclone Freddy Floods

Further to the Press Releases issued on 11th July and 14th October 2022 on the search for a strategic investor for MyBucks Banking Corporation Limited (the Bank), the Board of Directors of the Bank is pleased to inform the Bank’s valued customers and the public that the Registrar of Financial Institutions has granted approval to Centenary Rural Development Group Limited of Uganda (Centenary Group) and the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe to acquire 51% and 49% shareholding in the bank, respectively. The approval was granted on 23rd December 2022. Meanwhile, completion of the transaction awaits approval from COMESA Competition Commission.

With the approval, Centenary Group becomes the Bank’s new majority shareholder and the Bank becomes Centenary Group’s fourth subsidiary.
Centenary Group, is a limited liability company and a Group holding company of Centenary Bank Uganda, the largest commercial microfinance bank in Uganda. Centenary is also a holding company for two other subsidiaries – Centenary Foundation and Centenary Technology Services Limited. Centenary Group was initially incorporated as Centenary Rural Development Bank Limited on 6th April 1983. It changed its name to Centenary Rural Development Group Limited on 1st July 2020. The Group’s flagship subsidiary, Centenary Bank Uganda is a leading commercial microfinance bank serving a quarter of Uganda’s banking population with 2.4 million customers, 80 branches, 5,200 agents, 192 ATM, online digital platforms and 3,000 employees. Centenary Bank also supports 46,000 Village Savings and Lending Associations and 12,000 SACCOs.
In terms of financial performance, Centenary Group reported after tax profit of USD59 million (MWK49 billion) for the year ended December 2021, up from USD46 million (MWK38 billion) reported in 2020. 
The Group had total assets of USD1.4 billion (MWK1.1Tn) as at December 2021; with 47% (USD647 million; MWK528 billion) in loans and advances and 28% (USD385 million; MWK314 billion) in government securities, representing a combined 75% of the total assets. 

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Lilongwe. It covers seven districts of Malawi’s Central Region. It has seven ecclesiastical deaneries, 46 parishes and 620 outstations. Currently, the Archdiocese of Lilongwe is under the leadership of Archbishop George Desmond Tambala.
The Archdiocese owns several institutions in Malawi, including education institutions, hospitals and companies, in addition to owning several commercial properties within Lilongwe and surrounding districts. It has total assets of over MK30 billion. The Archdiocese also runs several community and social justice projects for the benefit of Malawi’s most marginalized people.

The unique combination of the Bank’s new shareholders will enable the Bank to deliver on its financial inclusion agenda and reach out to all the unbanked people across the country to change their lives thereby contributing to the achievement of the Malawi Government Agenda 2063.
