Blantyre Wednesday, 5th August- Centenary Bank Malawi has strengthened its support for cleaner cities by donating concrete waste bins and other sanitation supplies to Blantyre City Council as part of its ongoing environmental sustainability efforts.
The initiative forms part of the Bank’s MWK10 million commitment towards a wider national clean-up drive, supporting environmental sustainability and cleaner communities across Malawi. The Bank previously partnered with Lilongwe City Council and has now extended the initiative to Blantyre.
Speaking during the handover, Centenary Bank’s Head of Retail and SME Banking, Mayamiko Kalizang’oma, said the Bank felt obliged to support efforts to improve sanitation in the city.
“As part of the clean-up initiative that is going around different cities and districts, which we are part of, we believe that if we have a clean city and good health for our customers, then we should have good customers that we are servicing.”
Receiving the donation, Blantyre City Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerald Lipikwe, commended Centenary Bank for supporting the Council’s efforts to keep the city clean, particularly welcoming the donation of concrete waste bins.
Councillor Lipikwe explained that the concrete bins offer a more durable solution to challenges the Council has faced with metal waste bins, which have previously been vandalised and stolen.
“You are aware, even yourself, that the bins that we've been having for the past years, they were made of metal. So those ones, they have been vandalized, stolen, and they weren't staying for long.”
He said the concrete bins would last longer and help the Council improve waste management in the city.
“So I know that these bins, which are now made of concrete, they will last long and they will serve the purpose.”
Councillor Lipikwe also expressed appreciation for the Bank’s support, saying the initiative would contribute to the Council’s vision of keeping Blantyre clean.
Following the handover, Centenary Bank staff joined Blantyre City Council officials, vendors, ward councillors and other stakeholders in a clean-up exercise at Blantyre Market.
The participation of Bank staff demonstrated that the initiative goes beyond providing resources, with employees joining the Council and community members in taking action to keep the city clean.
The initiative reflects Centenary Bank’s belief in environmental stewardship and the importance of everyone playing a part in keeping our cities clean. Through partnerships with local authorities and communities, the Bank continues to support efforts that create cleaner, healthier places for people across Malawi.
