Blantyre, 11 November 2020: Centenary Bank Limited has donated MK0.5 million towards the 2020 Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) Annual Conference which is scheduled to take place on 19th – 20th November, 2020 at Sun ‘n’ Sand Holiday Resort in Mangochi.

The theme for the 2020 ECAMA Annual Conference is “Going Beyond Macroeconomic Stability: The Need for Building Resilience to External Shocks”.

According to ECAMA Executive member, Maleka Thula, who received the cheque on behalf of ECAMA, this year’s theme was carefully chosen considering the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the economy and sector wide impacts.

“It is important that as economists, we discuss ways that will help our economy to bounce back and be resilient to future external shocks. The banking sector hasn’t been spared as well. The banking sector plays a crucial role to the overall growth of an economy and development. Thus, a robust and resilient banking sector becomes critical to ensuring continued growth. We are confident that the outcome of the 2020 annual conference will help shape policy agenda that will help many sectors including the banking sector thrive.  We express our sincere gratitude to Centenary Bank for this timely donation.” – said Thula.

The conference will attract over 100 economists and key stakeholders in the economy including government officials, development practitioners, international experts, development partners, the banking sector, and others.

On his part Centenary Bank's Brand & PR Manager said the bank is pleased to support this conference where subject matter experts on economic issues will bang heads to come up with initiatives that will contribute to the overall economic development of the country.

“We believe that this sponsorship will go a long way in facilitating the right conversations and actions from our economic think tanks that will in essence contribute to the adoption of relevant policies that will contribute to the further economic development of Malawi. In this highly volatile environment, it is imperative that such discussions take place in order to shape up new norms that will help businesses, individuals and the economy at large to adapt quickly to the accelerated change that we are experiencing across all fronts” Chalamba said.

Centenary Bank Limited is a fully fledged bank with branches in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Zomba, Mangochi, Dzaleka, Kasungu and Madisi.
